2014-2015 Coordinators

Chris Meléndez

Hi! My name is Chris Meléndez and I am a senior in Ezra Stiles College, majoring in American Studies with a concentration in Politics and American Communities. I was born and raised in Silver Spring, MD, a quick metro ride from the heart of Washington, D.C. Outside of the classroom, I am in Sabrosura, Yale’s Premiere (and only) Latin Dance Team, I play a lot of IMs (especially coed football and softball), I serve on the Stiles Housing Committee, and I work as a Recruitment Coordinator in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and a Freshman Counselor in Stiles. I was previously a Peer Liaison for La Casa and Co-President of Sabrosura.

Due in large part to La Casa and its amazing support system, I have had the opportunity to do extensive work with multicultural communities during the past two summers, working in the Department of the Interior and at the AARP National Headquarters. I am currently exploring possibilities for the future, but I am especially interested in nonprofit management and working with underrepresented communities.

As for me, I have a laid back personality, but I put my heart and soul into all of my work; I express myself through my words and my feet; respect is by far the value I hold most dear; I make it a point to really listen to people; I want to make a positive impact on the world, and my favorite color is blue!

Laura Munoz

Hi! My name is Laura Munoz and I’m a Junior in Davenport College from Orange County, California double-majoring in Economics and Ethnicity, Race, and Migration.  When people describe me they usually use the words loud and crazy. I love being around people and having fun! If I’m not watching a movie or on stage performing, you will usually find me out and about, most likely lost not knowing where I’m headed.  If you see me around campus feel free to say “Hi”, I promise I don’t bite!

Eddie Ortiz-Nieves

Eddie is a sophomore in Silliman College from San Juan, Puerto Rico, majoring in Economics. When not drowning in Econ problem sets or working at the Admissions Office, you can probably find him on the dance floor creating a routine for the Ballroom Team or Sabrosura, the Latin Dance Team at Yale. This summer, he worked in the Parliament of the United Kingdom, where he learned about the intricacies of International Development and was inspired to finally declare his major. He loves community service, the chocolate chip cookies at Slifka, and temperatures above 75 degrees, which remind him of home.

Alfonso Toro (TC ’15):

Hi everyone! My name is Fonzy Toro and I am a junior in Trumbull College. I am an Ethnicity, Race, and Migration/ Spanish double major. I am a proud Latinx person with Mexican ancestry born and raised in Los Angeles. At Yale, I am a Master’s Aid for Trumbull and have been involved with college council, Ballet Folklorico, the Intercultural Affairs Council, MEChA, and De Colores, an LGBTQ organization that focuses on LGBTQ issues amongst the Latin@ community. (I was even apart of the Yale Quidditch team my freshman year, I can tell you more later). I studied abroad in Argentina the summer after my freshman year and in Spain the second semester of my sophomore year. This summer I volunteered as a “Roadie” in the annual HIV/AIDS Lifecycle trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise funds for research, activism and ultimately to find a cure to end HIV/AIDS. I love smiles, jogging, eating out, Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, going to the movies…. well there isn’t much that I don’t like, so I am always up for anything. I am a friendly person that you can always count on and talk to about anything, no matter how big or small, I am here!  Don’t ever hesitate to contact me whether its to catch a meal, take a walk, study break..etc you name it. Can’t wait to meet you!
