La Casa Cultural is pleased to announce the return of the La Casa Scholar of the House Fellowship! Named in honor of our distinguished alumna Cathy Kissee Sandoval, the first-ever Latina Rhodes Scholar, the La Casa Cultural Scholar of the House Fellowship is intended to encourage research in the field of Latine Studies, broadly defined. Cathy Kissee Sandoval graduated from Yale in 1984, and went on to receive an MPhil in Political Thought at Oxford and a JD at Stanford Law. Currently, she serves as a Commissioner of the California Public Works Commission—the first Latina to hold this position—and is a tenured professor at Santa Clara University School of Law. During her time at Yale, Commissioner Kissee Sandoval spent her senior year as a Scholar of the House, conducting research on the admission rates of minority students in elite East Coast universities and colleges. We revitalize the Fellowship in her name to recognize her commitment to producing engaged scholarship focused on communities of color.
Recognizing the lack of funding for projects that propose to study relevant issues concerning U.S. Latine communities, the award seeks to fill such a void and supplement the chosen student’s ability to complete their proposed study. Current sophomores and juniors of all disciplines and majors are eligible and encouraged to apply. We especially encourage projects with a community-engagement focus. Applicants must be enrolled in Yale College for full-time study, have achieved at least a 3.25 GPA, and submit all relevant application materials before the February 15, 2018 deadline for consideration. Note that this is a full-year commitment—applicants will have several term-time obligations in addition to their summer research project.
